"Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta" star Benzino is detailing a dispute with his nephew that climaxed with Scott shooting Benzino en route to a funeral for the rapper's mother on Saturday in Duxbury, Massachusetts.
The hip-hop star tells Boston's WCVB-TV that in the past he had voiced his concern that his sister and nephew Gai Scott were "taking advantage" of his mother, and that he hadn't spoken with Scott in a number of years. He adds that money has a way of taking over "people's love for each other, even family."
Once Scott opened fire Saturday, Benzino -- born Raymond Scott -- says he "tried to open the hearse door" to find shelter, but ended up climbing in the car with his aunt. Benzino was hit twice and taken to the hospital. He was released on Monday.
Gai Scott is pleading not guilty to a charge of assault with intent to murder. Following the shooting, Scott told police that he fired on Benzino out of self-defense after Benzino reportedly pulled his car alongside him and asked, "You got a problem with me?"
