AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 65-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team lost 4-0 to the nation's top-ranked Texas Longhorns in the First Round of the 2023 ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday at Texas Tennis Center.
Fresno State (1-1) was tested early against some tough pairs, but Carlotta Nonnis Marzano and Carolina Piferi held their own at the No. 3 position, which was tied at 3-3 when the Longhorns clinched the doubles point.
Pang Jittakoat - the 2022 Mountain West Player of the Year - won the opening set 6-3 at No. 1 singles against Texas' Nicole Khirin and Fresno State freshman Mariya Vyshkina was close to capturing the second set at the No. 6 slot when Texas (4-0) clinched the match.
Jittakoat, Vyshkina and Matilde Magrini all were in the second set of their singles contests when the match ended.
Fresno State will face either Baylor or LMU on Saturday in the consolation match of the 2023 Texas Regional.
