Bulldogs head to Berkeley for Cal Cup

2023 OUTLOOK

Fresno State opened its sixth season in the water last weekend hosting the Bulldog Fest falling in four matches to No. 7 Michigan, No. 5 UC Irvine, No. 6 Hawaii & No. 4 Cal.

The Bulldogs rank No. 9 in this week's CWPA rankings.

The 'Dogs will take on four more ranked opponents this weekend at the Cal Cup in No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 UCLA, No. 11 UC Davis & No. 14 San Jose State.

The Bulldogs bring back 11 returners and welcome eight newcomers this season.

2022 REVIEW

The Bulldogs finished the season with an overall record of 19-8 and went a perfect 7-0 in the GCC.

The 'Dogs won their second straight GCC regular season championship and went on to win their second straight GCC tournament title with an 11-8 win over Loyola Marymount.

Head coach Natalie Benson was named the GCC Coach of the Year for a second straight season.

The Bulldogs bring back three All-GCC selections from last season in Paula Nieto Jasny, who was a second team selection, while Daphne Guevremont was tabbed an honorable mention and Brooke Ochoa earned GCC All-Freshman honors.

'DOGS REMAIN IN TOP 10

Despite suffering four losses at the Bulldog Fest last weekend, all to top-seven nationally ranked opponents, Fresno State remains in the top 10 nationally in the CWPA rankings this week checking in at No. 9.

FRESHMAN ANDRESS POSTS STANDOUT OPENING WEEKEND

Freshman Hailey Andress had a standout debut weekend for the Bulldogs scoring five goals and added two assist while tying for second on the team with 22 shots.

In the 'Dogs season opener against Michigan, Andress scored four goals and attempted nine shots.

The Glendora native added a goal and two assists against UC Irvine.

SCOUTING NO. 11 UC DAVIS

UC Davis gets its 2023 season underway this weekend after going 16-12 in 2022 with a 3-3 mark in the Big West.

The Aggies fell to UC San Diego in the first round of the Big West Conference Tournament.

UCD was picked fourth in the Big West preseason poll and senior center Noelle Wijnbelt was named to the Big West preseason coaches' team.

SCOUTING NO. 1 STANFORD

Stanford also gets its 2023 season started this weekend at the Cal Cup.

The Cardinal went 25-2 last season winning both the MPSF Tournament and the NCAA Championship with a 10-7 win over USC.

Stanford has reached the NCAA final in 11 of the last 12 seasons while appearing in every NCAA Championship since the event's inception in 2001.

SCOUTING NO. 3 UCLA

UCLA comes into the weekend ranked No. 3 in the nation and is off to a 5-0 start with wins over Indiana, San Diego State, Wagner, UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara.

The Bruins went 24-6 last season and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament falling to Stanford.

UCLA has totaled 77 goals while only allowing 26 goals through its first five matches.

SCOUTING NO. 14 SJSU

San Jose State ranks No. 14 in the nation and is 2-1 on the season after wins over No. 20 Loyola Marymount and No. 25 Marist while falling to No. 6 Hawaii.

The Spartans went 11-16 with a 0-6 mark in the MPSF in 2022.

SJSU has scored 42 goals this season with a season-high 20 against LMU.
